Agricultural Extension
 |
Introduction
Agricultural Extension endeavors to transmit scientific know-how to farmers so as to improve their socio-economic status through farming efficiency. Government of India decided to establish Extension Wings at the Colleges of Agriculture, Ludhiana, Tollygunj (West Bengal), Hyderabad, Poona and Nagpur with the financial assistance of Ford Foundation, USA, especially to cater to the needs of the agricultural graduates. |
The Extension Wing was attached to the College of Agriculture, Poona in the year 1954 and instruction in Agricultural Extension commenced in the year 1955. Initially, the subject was offered for the UG courses as one of the major subjects in the B.Sc. (Agri.) degree curriculum and subsequently it was included in the PG and Ph.D. syllabus too. Presently the Extension Wing is known as Division of Extension Education.
Extension Education strived for the development and upliftment of rural poor through Community Development, National Extension Service, Training and Visit System, etc. Approach of extension changed from unifocal to multifocal and broad based extension, from cropping system to farming system. New trends like demand driven extension, farmer led and market led extension have been introduced in the present extension system.
